Just 175 Miles from Florida, Abaco is just a hop, skip and jump from the US mainland with direct flights coming into Abaco's capital, Marsh Harbour, daily. Hope Town, just a short ferry ride away, is one of the most picturesque places in all of The Bahamas! The candy stripe lighthouse at the mouth of a natural harbour has become synonymous with Hope Town and is one of only three kerosene powered lighthouses in the world. Built in 1862, it is a monument that the Hope Towners are proud of and was the focus of a community restoration project in the 1990's.
The huge, completely protected harbor, has become famous as a sailing capital to pleasure boaters and the keys surrounding are a fisherman's playground. Boating is made more accessible to Hope Towners by public docks, open for all residents to use.
Skirting the Atlantic side of Elbow Cay and Hope Town is a beautiful white sand beach that stretches for miles and is protected by a reef just offshore. This provides great entertainment to snorkellers, and beach goer's or the Dive Shop in town can offer dive tours for those interested.
Hope Town settlement offers dining and shopping options and even has a museum to preserve the history of the early settlers to the island.
There is no motorized traffic in Hope Town and visitors enjoy the sights of clap board cottages on foot or by golf cart.
An unforgettable sight is the reflections of the late sun from the multicolored houses along the northeast shore of the harbor. Casuarinas tower over the northern half of town, and huge palms are the skyline for the southern half of the harbor. Sunset and sunrise at Hope Town are spectacular.
